What are SpeedFan’s features?
CPU Monitor: It can monitor the CPU installed on the Desktop, PC, or Laptop running Windows operating system. The monitoring shows the voltages, fan speed, and temperature. It can read values from the hardware monitoring chips installed in a system,
SMART Information: SPeedFan can access and show SMART information of the Hard Disk Drives (HDD) installed as a peripheral in the system. Not all HDDs support SMART, so SpeedFan only works with supporting HDDs. It can also show temperatures of HDDs. It supports SCSI disks as well. SpeedFan can change the FSB on some hardware’s as well.
Controlling System Fan: As a basic functionality it controls the CPU fan and its speed. An increase in speed can lower the temperature of a CPU drastically. However, faster speeds can increase wear and tear as well as the life of the fan.
Noise Reduction: The variance in CPU speeds can reduce the CPU noise. Fans generate the most noise in a CPU. However, reducing the speed can lead to a potential meltdown so the user has to stay vigilant.
New Support: The latest version now supports full IPMI, full support for IT877IE, full support for Intel Sunrise point (Z170) SMBus, full support for ST Micro STT S2004, full support for NCT6793D, full support for Giantec GT34TS04 and Gt 34TS02, support for Atom E3900 SMBus, support for Atom C200 SMBus, and support for Fubtek F7187 and F71868A. It has fixed many bugs on SMbus in Intel 6 Series, C20x series, SCSI_PASS_THROUGH access on some systems. It can also access Nuvoton NCT6791D and NCT6792D fan readings.
What are SpeedFan’s limitations?
SpeedFan cannot monitor the fans installed on graphics accelerator yet. This product utilizes the hardware monitor sensors as part of monitor chips attached to the CPU of a system. SpeedFan won’t work with systems that do not have hardware monitoring and sensor chips.
